Paw-some learning

Joshua Class had a paw-some visitor this afternoon – Amy from the RSPCA.

The pupils learnt all about the role that the RSCPA plays, the importance of correctly caring for pets, and discussed whether animals have feelings.

As always, Joshua Class was a credit to the academy – listening carefully, sitting still and being super polite to our visitor.

Great work Joshua Class. Woof Woof!

Caterpillars & Easter Art

The children have had an interesting end to the term. We have learnt the story of the naughty bus and have been tour guides and bus drivers of Newquay. Joshua class has also kept a very close eye on the changes happening with our class caterpillars. They have been writing butterfly diaries and learnt all about the life cycle.

We have been learning about 3D shapes and consolidating our learning about number bonds to five, sharing equally and combining two numbers.

This week we have been learning all about Easter and why we celebrate it. The children have enjoyed some egg inspired art, making lots of different eggs using a range of artistic techniques.

Pendennis Castle

Joshua Class enjoyed a fantastic trip to Pendennis Castle in Falmouth yesterday.

At the castle we learnt all about the landmark’s exciting history. We learnt Henry 8th upset the Spanish and French Kings by taking a new wife. The children enjoyed acting out the history and we even pretended to battle the French and Spanish when they sailed down the estuary to attack the castle.

The children then did some amazing investigating! They tried on clothes from the past, discussed what job the person did and if they were rich or poor. We learnt about pot boys, governors, blacksmiths and gunners. We then investigated boxes and tried to figure out what the old artefacts had been used for and by whom. Joshua class loved learning about doctors, teachers, how the castle was lit and how the food was eaten.

After lunch we were allowed to explore and we had the whole castle to ourselves. We played with the cannons and discovered all the different parts of the castle.

Joshua class, as always, made us very proud!

Goodbye winter

This week Joshua Class has been discussing the changes in the season from winter to spring.

Joshua Class decorated the playground in spring flowers and trees and then a snow blizzard arrived to cover up the flowers. We then had fun watching the flowers appear through as the snow melted.

Some of the children had other fantastic ideas; like building igloos, clearing the snow with brushes, pretending to be Elsa the ice queen and making spring potions to bring out the sunshine.

The children loved playing in the snow!

International Women’s Day

To celebrate International Women’s Day, Joshua Class had a very special visitor… author and illustrator, Anna Lewis AKA Sketchy Muma.

Anna spoke about the books she has illustrated and showed the children some of her work. Anna has also has written and illustrated her own book as Sketchy Muma.

Everyone in Joshua class created three giant dragons. They decided we should make a disco dragon, a rainbow dragon and a beach dragon. The children used different textures and materials to make dragon scales and parts of the dragons. They chose the medium they wanted to create with – including paint, glitter, material, wool, shells, bubble wrap, pens and many more things.

Well done Joshua class, amazing creative team work!

Zog and his eggs

We have had an exciting start to this half term in Joshua Class.

At the beginning of the week we were visited by Zog the Dragon, who laid eggs in school and left his doctors kit so the pupils could care for them. He also left each of the children an egg to look after. There were some amazing ideas on how to keep their own egg safe and happy.

Some of the class built beds and houses to keep their eggs warm. Some of the children had really clever ideas, like water for drinking and windows for sunlight!

Some of the class built their eggs a castle out of blocks and enjoyed using our loose parts to build turrets, drawbridges and battlements. We also discussed giving the egg a healthy diet and exercising with each egg!

On Friday the children received a video message from Zog thanking them for caring for his eggs and asking them to return them. All the children have managed to look after their egg all week – keeping them safe and happy!

Alien visitors

Joshua class were so surprised today to see what the security cameras had picked up this weekend… Newquay Primary Academy had been visited by some friendly aliens!

The children had some excellent questions… Where are you from? How old are you? What colour is your planet?

They were even more shocked when we went outside and found some alien goo. Joshua class were so excited and all the children really enjoyed exploring the goo and discussing what it was.

Excellent exploring and questioning Joshua Class!
