Our governors have a varied and important role in helping our school run effectively. The governor role is strategic rather than operational. Governors don’t get involved with the day to day running of the school, instead supporting and challenging our school’s leadership team to drive school improvement. Our governors abide by the Seven Principles of Public Life which are: Selflessness; Integrity; Objectivity; Accountability; Openness; Honesty; and Leadership. Being a school governor is a commitment and a responsibility, but offers you the chance to see first-hand the impact you can make in improving education for children in our community.
Multi-academy trust governance
Newquay Primary Academy is part of Cornwall Education Learning Trust (CELT). CELT is held to account by the Education Funding Agency (EFA) for its finances and by OFSTED for teaching in each of its academies. CELT’s Members and Trustees provide strategic leadership and accountability across our family of academies. Detailed information on the governance of our multi-academy trust can be found on the CELT website by clicking here.
Local governing body
At a local level, our Local Governing Body (LGB) is answerable to our parents, pupils and local community.
Although our LGB is not legally responsible for the statutory functions of academies – this responsibility sits with the CELT Board of Trustees – it has an important role in challenging and supporting our academy to operate effectively. Governors set the aims and objectives for our school and set policies and targets for achieving those aims and objectives. They monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making and act as a source of challenge and support to the headteacher. They help to ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction for our school based on the specific qualities and community characteristics of Newquay Primary Academy.
Being a governor is a position with a term of four years and involves meetings approximately every half term.
