Intent

"The intent of the curriculum is the content we expect children to learn. Intent also covers the sequence in which our pupils encounter the curriculum.

At Newquay Primary Academy our curriculum is taught with the consideration of the needs of all learners. We aim for our curriculum to be exciting and to inspire children to nurture a passion for lifelong learning, encouraging inquisitiveness and confidence in our pupils. Our curriculum encompasses not only the formal requirements of the National Curriculum, but goes beyond the experiences of the classroom to ensure that our children are exposed to the richest and most varied opportunities that we can provide. Our curriculum is enhanced by our commitment to values-based education and, through this, we provide learning experiences which promote confident, self-motivated pupils who are driven to make a positive difference to our community.

Reception

Our classrooms are well resourced and have direct access to an outdoor play area. Pupils learn about their world through nature play and outdoor learning. Pupils work within the EYFS framework but increasing emphasis is placed on the teaching of numeracy and literacy skills as well as further encouraging the development of the whole child. Children have plenty of opportunities for drama, music and art. They also begin to understand our school values which helps them start to challenge, question and understand the world around them.

Year 1 and 2

Pupils in Key Stage 1 continue to build on their knowledge and skills acquired during the foundation stage. We develop their curiosity about the world through rich and exciting experiences with regular trips, visitors and plenty of opportunities for hands on investigation and problem solving.

In literacy pupils are introduced to wide range of genres and literature. We want pupils to enjoy the magic of books and to develop a love of both written and spoken language. Pupils are taught spelling and grammar rules and also consolidate their phonic knowledge.

Pupils are also taught how to confidently use and apply their mathematical knowledge and relate it to their everyday lives. They develop excellent mental skills and are encouraged to give mathematical explanations of the strategies and methods they used to solve a problem.

Spelling, maths and topic homework are set on a weekly basis and pupils are encouraged to read or engage in a reading based activity each night.

Pupils also are introduced to computing and simple programming in Year 1 and enjoy using the school ICT suite.

Year 3-5

Between Years 3 and 5 pupils experience a greater depth of learning and are begin to prepare for life in secondary school.

We also encourage children to develop their awareness and responsibility for the natural environment, in a spirit of fun, adventure and exploration.

By the end of Year 3, all pupils will have participated in three adventurous outdoor learning activities led by Newquay Tretherras Duke of Edinburgh Leaders.

In Year 5, pupils are given the opportunity of completing the discovery level of the John Muir Award alongside their Curriculum. The John Muir Award is a nationally recognised environmental award scheme focused on wild places.

Year 6

Upon entering Year 6, your child will embark on a year-long journey with the core aim of making each child a well-rounded eleven year-old who is ready for the next stage of his or her learning journey. Every pupil will develop a firm understanding of his or her own strengths and abilities ahead of secondary school. Pupils are given opportunities to develop responsibility and leadership skills, and to employ social skills, teamwork, self-esteem and respect for others.
